Laser hair removal targets, melanin, a pigment that gives your hair its color. When you’re having a laser hair removal treatment done, the IPL (intense pulse light) device or laser targets the melanin inside of the hair follicle in your skin. The laser creates heat which safely damages the follicle and prevents hair growth. Because of this, laser hair removal works best on skin and hair that has less melanin, which means it's best to have the treatment done in the fall or winter when you’re less likely to be tan. In this post, we will look at a couple of ways melanin affects laser hair removal treatments.

While laser hair removal can be done on people with varying hair colors and skin tones, it works best on those with dark hair and lighter complexions. Darker hair means there is a greater concentration of melanin in the hair follicle which will absorb a lot more of the laser’s heat. As we know, melanin is not just present in hair follicles, but also in individual’s skin. The darker the skin, the less concentrated the laser is on the hair follicle.
